Jack's story
John Edward McHugh aka Jack was born on 20 August 1909 at Stanmore, New South Wales, Australia. He enlisted in the 2/13 Infantry Battalion on 23 May 1940 at Randwick NSW. Prior to enlisting he was a horse groom. He arrived in the Middle East on 26 November 1940. He was injured near Burg El Arab and sustained a broken hip. The soldiers involved in the incident described themselves as French but subsequently could not be located when the British 8th Army convened a board of enquiry. Family were told that Jack and some mates were making their way to Alexandria to buy Christmas presents for family back home. He had dark hair, blue eyes and had a birthmark on his right fore arm.
