From How We Served

The final resting place for 23036 & V15213 Major George Hector McIntosh of Fairfield & Elwood, Victoria, who prior to his enlistment for War Service on the 13th of July 1918 had been employed as a saddler.

George was allocated to reinforcements for the 1st Australian Wireless Squadron 1st AIF and was embarked for Basra, via India on the 14th of September.

Serving as a Sapper in Mesopotamia in support of Dunsterforce, George’s Unit would be redesignated as the 1st Australian and New Zealand Wireless Squadron.

Shortly after George’s being taken on strength in the field, he was evacuated sick with measles and was hospitalized in Baghdad. With the War against Turkey now over, George was returned to duty, and would remain on such until he was deemed ready to be returned to Australia vide India, departing on the 22nd of March 1919.

Following his arrival back in Australia, George received his official discharge from the 1st AIF for his re-entry into civilian life on the 3rd of May 1919.

With the outbreak of a Second World War, George again sort re-enlistment with the Australian Military Forces, joining up on the 29th of May 1941.

Accepted for service within Australia, George was allocated to the Australian Army Ordnance Corps, and received his Commission as a Lieutenant on his enlistment. George would serve continuously with various AAOC establishments.

By the 1st of September 1942, George had been promoted to Major, and was serving with Headquarters 1st Australian Base Ordnance Depot. With continual service within Australia, George’s premature death, at the age of 56, occurred due to illness on the 27th of December 1943.

Following his passing ‘Great War’ veteran Major George McIntosh, who had chosen to serve his country again, during World War Two, was formally interred within Springvale War Cemetery, Victoria.
