Let us remember a Fallen Soldier of The Great War memorialised at Mimi Cemetery, N.S.W.
On the 7th June 1917, Private William Leslie Hunter Sneddon, also known as "Rasso", 34th Battalion (Reg No-896), miner (Aberdare Colliery), from Cumberland Street, Cessnock, New South Wales, was Killed in Action during the Battle of Messines. Cause of death not definite.
Reported to have been slightly gassed at Gunners Farm or Ploegsteert Wood before the stunt began at 3.10 am.
Born at West Maitland, New South Wales on the 29th January 1890 as SNEDDEN to William Hunter (secretary of the Royal Pride of Minmi Lodge, died 4.12.1935, Church Street, Minmi, New South Wales, age 68, buried at Right Hand Side, Section 12, Plot 009), from Church Street, Minmi, New South Wales, and Alice Maria Sneddon nee Richards (died 20.12.1930, Church Street, Minmi, New South Wales, age 66, mother of 6, sleeping at Right Hand Side, Section 12, Plot 007), from Church Street, Minmi, New South Wales, Les enlisted on the 10th January 1916, age 25 years 11 months as Leslie, at West Maitland, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A20 Hororata on the 2nd May 1916.
Disembarked Plymouth, England 23.6.1916.
Proceeded O/Seas to France from Southampton, England 21.11.1916.
Leslie’s name has been inscribed on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial (Panel 23), Belgium.
Place of Association - Minmi, New South Wales, Australia.
Mr. Sneddon’s name has also been inscribed on the Minmi Roll of Honour, Minmi St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church Roll of Honour and the Cessnock War Memorial as L SNEDDEN. A member of the Cessnock Miners' Lodge, unsure if a Roll of Honour was ever produced. A member of the Cessnock Tent No. 93 Independent Order of Rechabites, unsure if a Roll of Honour was produced. A member of the Star of Cessnock Lodge, No. 113, Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows, unsure if a Roll of Honour was produced.
I have placed poppies at the Sneddon memorialised gravesite in remembrance of the service and supreme sacrifice of their son Les for God, King & Country. Right Hand Side, Section 12, Plot 009.
