Lieutenant Norman Percival Meggitt (Service No:QX17093) enlisted in the AIF on 22 July 1940 as a Private with 8 Division Ammunition Coy, and was commissioned on 1 February 1941 following completion of the Potential Officers' Course. Lieutenant Meggitt embarked from Sydney for the Middle East on 9 April 1941, and was attached to 9th Division Ammunition Coy on 5 July 1941 when he was KiA at Tobruk. Lieutenant Meggitt is recognised as one of the Rats of Tobruk.
Norm was born in Ipswich QLD in 1910, seventh of eight children of Arthur James Meggitt (b1872 in Yorkshire, England) and Beatrice Maud Purdue (b1872 in Durham, England). Arthur immigrated in 1883, arriving in Cooktown with his parents and siblings on board the Duke of Buckingham, and Beatrice arrived in Brisbane with her parents and siblings in 1884 on board the Waroonga. Arthur and Beatrice married in 1895 in Brisbane, and settled initially in Brisbane, where Arthur took over his father's business in 1893. In the early 1900s they moved their family to Ipswich, where Arthur worked initially as a Joiner and Cabinet Maker, then for the Ipswich Railway Workshops as a Coach Builder. By 1918 Arthur was working as a Cabinet Maker, and following Beatrice's death in 1924 Arthur remarried in Brisbane.
Norm worked as a Warehouse Assistant for Hoffnung & Coy in Brisbane - he was a member of their Warehouse Cricket Team and a keen golfer. In 1935 in Brisbane he married Dorothy Lillian Horsey (b1908 in Brisbane, QLD) - Dorothy was working as a Jeweller in Brisbane. Norm and Dorothy settled in Brisbane, where Norm was a Commercial Traveller in 1940 when he enlisted in the Army. Norm was KiA in Torbuk in 1941. Dorothy settled in Brisbane, and was in Caloundra when she died in 1997.
