From How We Served

The final resting place for; - 268 & V6494 Sergeant Daniel Wiliam Mouat had immigrated to Australia from the Shetland Islands, Scotland prior to the outbreak of World War One, and was employed as a draper when he joined up for War Service at Murtoa, Victoria on the 23rd of August 1914.

Daniel was allocated to the 5th Battalion 1st AIF and was embarked for Egypt and further training with the First Australian Contingent, departing Australia on the 21st of October.

Following his training phase, Daniel was with his Unit when it was committed to the Dardanelles Campaign, and was present for the landing on Gallipoli on the 25th of April 1915. Daniel’s service in the trenches was to be continuous until he was evacuated due to illness for hospitalization on the 8th of July.

Suffering from the effects of rheumatism, Daniel was sent to Lemnos Island, and then to Mudros Island, before he was shipped back to Egypt and was admitted into hospital on the 4th of August, and remained in care until he was discharged back to duty on the 21st of September.

Daniel was no longer deemed fit for service in the trenches, and he began his repatriation back to Australia on escort duty, departing Egypt on the 3rd of January 1916.

Following his return to Australia Daniel would receive ongoing treatment at the 5th Australian General Hospital (Melbourne) for his poor health which had been caused by his time on Gallipoli. Daniel was deemed medically unfit for further service, and he received his official discharge from the 1st AIF for his re-entry into civilian life on the 25th of July 1916.

With the outbreak of the Second World War, Danial again presented himself for service with the Australian Military Forces, when he enlisted on the 1st of October 1940.

Daniel was accepted for further service, and would be engaged with Training Battalions in Victoria and New South Wales, and was on strength with the 1st Australian Army Service Corps Training Battalion when he was admitted into the 115th Australian General Hospital (Heidelberg) due to illness.

Daniel was still being hospitalized when he succumbed to sickness, passing on the 16th of June 1944, at the age of 57.

Following his death whilst again serving with the Australian Military Forces, Sergeant Daniel Mouat, a Great War veteran, who had saw service at the landing on Gallipoli, was laid to rest within Springvale War Cemetery Victoria.
