John was the third of four children born to Frederick and Catherine. His only brother Frederick was killed in 1934 in a motorcycle accident, aged 27 (see https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/32943301). His eldest sister was Gladys (she married three times) and the other sister was Thelma.
John was a POW on board the Italian transport ship Nino Bixio when it was torpedoed by a British submarine in the Mediterranean on 17 August 1942. The Nino Bixio was transporting Allied POWs from Libya to Italy. He was one of the 122 Australian POWs to survive the incident. He and another three men died later by execution.
