Hugh's birth was registered as Hughie Clifford (reg. Perth 1709/1921). His parents Sigfred and Alice (known as May) married in South Australia in 1907. Hugh was one of nine children and the youngest surviving child, a younger brother passing in infancy. An older brother, Allan (Curly) died of illness in a POW Camp in Thailand on Christmas Eve, 1943. His other older brother, Frederick, also served.
