FALL FROM TRUCK.
Soldier Fatally Injured.
KALGOORLIE, April 27.-After having returned safely from the Middle East, a soldier, on his way home on leave broke his journey yesterday at Kalgoorlie and was killed. He was Sig Geoffrey North (27), married, who arrived yesterday morning from the Eastern States. His wife is understood to be managing a vineyard in the Midland district.
North was riding yesterday afternoon on the tabletop of a 6-wheeled semi-trailer truck driven by John Vlack, of Ardagh-avenue, Kalgoorlie, when he fell off. A rear wheel of thei truck passed over him and he died in the Kalgoorlie District Hospital at 6.40 pm. The St John ambulance was called to the scene of the accident in Gladstone-street near the intersection with Macdonald-street at 4.45 pm, according to the police report and North was conveyed to the men's surgical ward of the district hospital suffering from crushed ribs, abrasions, lacerated left leg and shock.
It was stated that North was sitting on the back of the truck facing the canopy. The truck carried several passengers. Vlack felt a bump, heard a cry and stopped the truck) immediately. The coroner has ordered a post-morten examination.
INQUEST CONCLUDED
The adjourned inquest into the death of Signaller Geoffrey North (27), married, returned soldier who was fatally injured when run over by a semi-trailer in Kalgoorlie on April 26, was concluded in the Kalgoorlie Coroner's Court before Mr. R. De Passey, J.P., yesterday afternoon.
The coroner's finding was that the deceased died from shock and internal bleeding from injuries accidentally caused by falling from a semi-trailer driven by John Vlach, and that no blame is attachable to the driver. The coroner expressed the court's regret that North should have safely survived service overseas and then be accidentally killed here. At the time North was en route to Perth from the Eastern States, his wife, it is under stood, being the manager of a vineyard in the Midland district.
Evidence of the sobriety of the party on the trailer, and of the fact that the vehicle was being carefully driven at about 12 to 15 miles at the time, was given by David Dunlop, railway employee of Woolgangie, who, with Ronald Ramsay, was riding on the trailer when the tragedy occurred. His evidence was corroborated by Ramsay and John Vlach, driver of the semi trailer who resides at 12 Ardagh avenue and whose home they had been visiting.
Medical evidence was given by Doctors M. Gorman and H. Davis. Deceased it was stated, had suffered severe shock and very severe injuries, and it was realised that the case was hopeless.
Constable W. Young stated that he examined the scene of the tragedy in Gladstone street after the accident and that though the road was fairly deeply rutted there were no signs of skid or swerve marks. Sergeant Minchin conducted the inquiry for the police.
