Pilot Officer Lorne Allan John Passmore 412675 RAAF was the co-pilot aboard USAAF 2nd Bombardment Squadron B-26 Marauder 40-1508 "The Virginian" which was part of a mixed formation of B-26, B-25 and B-17 aircraft that were detailed to attack Japanese positions at Lae and Salamaua
The American formation was attacked by up to 20 Japanese Zero fighters and The Virginian was shot down into a bay approximately 30 miles south of Salamaua in New Guinea with Pilot Officer Passmore and the USAAF crew from the 22nd Bombardment Group, 5th US Air Force (known as the "Red Raiders") all killed
Pilot Officer Passmore is commemorated on the Lae Memorial as his body was not recovered
