Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From How We Served

The final resting place for; - 60982 & V83954 for Sapper Celestine Leslie Paterson of South Melbourne and Bright, Victoria who had been employed as a labourer when he volunteered for War Service on the 22nd of May 1918, and was allocated to the 9th General Service Reinforcements of the 1st AIF.

Celestine, aged 19, was embarked for England and further training on the 31st of August per the HMAT ‘Barambah’. Whilst at sea on route for England, the ‘Barambah’ suffered an outbreak of influenza, and by the time it had reached England, three days after the signing of the Armistice, some 20 members of the 1st AIF on board, as well a total of four of the ship’s crew had already died.

With the War having ended, Celestine was assigned to Australian Army Service Corps training and was mustered as a transport driver serving at Hurdcott Training Camp.

By the 9th of August 1919, Celestine was embarked for his repatriation to Australia, and following his return, he was formally discharged from the 1st AIF on the 12th of October for his re-entry into civilian life.

With the coming of a Second World War, Celestine again presented himself for enlistment on the 2nd of May 1940 and was allocated to the Royal Australian Engineers.

Now serving as a Sapper, Celestine was taken on strength with the 5th Workshop and Park Company. Within weeks of his enlistment, Celestine’s sudden passing, at the age of 41, due to illness occurred on the 15th of May.

Sapper Celestine Paterson was accorded a formal funeral and interment within an official Commonwealth War Grave, and to this day rests within Williamstown General Cemetery, Victoria.
