Robert's birth was registered in 1906 in Marrickville (reg. 5119). He was the eldest son of Robert and Winifred, and second of their four children. He was known by his middle name and his nickname was Jack.
In 1929, he married Jean Louise WAND in Sydney. They lived in Kirribilli, later moving to Kogarah.
He was a POW on board the Italian transport ship Nino Bixio when it was torpedoed by a British submarine in the Mediterranean on 17 August 1942. The Nino Bixio was transporting Allied POWs from Libya to Italy. He initially survived the incident but died of his wounds on a raft (according to Rats of Tobruk Roll of Honour).
