Russell Bradburn POLACK was born on 2nd March, 1918 in Summer Hill, Sydney to Russell William POLACK and Ethel BRADBURN who had married in Sydney in 1916

He enlisted in the RAAF on 26th April, 1941 and was with the 32 Squadron

He was killed in action when he was shot down on 22nd July, 1942 in Popogo, New Guinea and is buried in Port Moresby Bomana War Cemetery and his name is memorialised on the Australian War Memorial and the Roll of Honour in Sydney

He was a crew member of a Lockheed Hudson A16 -201 which was involved in a solo mission near Port Moresby to shadow an enemy cruiser force in the Gulf of Huon.  Two hours after take off while returning to its base, the crew were attacked by the pilot of a Japanes fighter and tried to escape. Ten minutes later the aircraft was shot down & crashed in a dense wooded area located near the village of Popogo in the region of Buna.  The wreckage was sighted on Feb 28, 1943 - all four crew members were killed

The crew were:

Pilot Officer Warren Cowan (/explore/people/512084), 31 years old from Angaston SA, was killed in action on 22 July 1942, along with his crew;

Navigator, Pilot Officer David Taylor (/explore/people/649251), 33, from Hobart Tasmania and

gunners Sergeant Russell Polack, 24 of Summer Hill NSW, and

Sergeant Lauri Sheard (/explore/people/515235), 20, of Nuriootpa, SA.
