Biography

"MILITARY CROSS WON.

Mr. J. Julge, of Holland-street, Southwark, has been notified by the Department of Defence that his son, Lieutenant (now Captain) Percy Emil Julge, has been awarded the Military Cross, the distinction for gallantry ranking next after the Victoria Cross. The "Gazette" notice containing the intimation sets out that "His Majesty the King has been graciously pleased to confer the Military Cross on the undermentioned officer, in recognition of his gallantry and devotion to duty in the field:—

Lieutenant Percy Emil Julge, for conspicuous gallantry. He led his party with great courage and bravery in two raids on the enemy's trenches, and set a fine example to his men. On one occasion he personally accounted for several of the enemy." - from the Adelaide Chronicle 16 Dec 1916 (nla.gov.au)

"CAPTAIN P. E. JULGE AGAIN HONORED.

For a further act of courage and determination, Captain Percy Emil Julge, who gained the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry in August last, has been granted a bar to the decoration. He was awarded the cross for leading a party with great courage and bravery in two raids on the enemy's trenches, and set a fine example to his men. On one occasion he personally accounted for several of the enemy. Captain Julge is the youngest son of Mr. J. Julge, of Holland-street, Southwark. He is now in his 23rd year. He received his education at the Thebarton State School, and was afterwards employed by Messrs. Colton, Palmer, & Preston. He gained a commission in the 76th Battalion (Citizen Forces) in 1913, and was granted a second lieutenancy in the Australian Imperial Forces late in 1914. He sailed from Adelaide on May 31, 1915, and, after a sojourn in Egypt, participated in the Galiipoli campaign. Later he was transferred from Egypt to France." - from the Adelaide Chronicle 03 Feb 1917 (nla.gov.au)
