Cpl Lloyd Cater Pulling served in 2/10 Field Company, Royal Australian Engineers, part of the 8th Australian Division. His parents were William Cater Pulling (1892-1972) and Elsie Victoria Pulling (1892-1981). His father was a carpenter as was Lloyd before the war. The family lived at 210 Moreland Road in Brunswick West, Victoria, Australia.
The 2/10 Field Company was attached to the 2/19th Battalion (Infantry). On the day that he was killed in action, this unit was assigned to defend the western approaches to the city of Singapore. In addition to Cpl Pulling, fifteen other member of his company were killed in action or listed as presumed dead on 9 Feb 1942. On the night of 8 Feb 1942, beginning at 11:00 pm, Japanese artillery bombarded defending forces for 15 hours. Japanese forces crossed the Johore Strait on the night of 8 Feb 1942. Heavy fighting occurred on 9 February when the 2/19th Ballation was overrun.
