James was born in Fulham, London on 17th January 1899 under the name of James Manning George Herbert GATHERCOLE

His parents were James William GATHERCOLE & Helen Jane EMES who married in St Matthews Church in Hammersmith, London on 7th July, 1898 - his Mother remarried in St Martin, London in 1921 to James Thomas RAINBOW 

James died in a Medi Evac aircraft accident in Glenbrook & was cremated in the Northern Suburbs Crematorium in North Ryde - he also has a Remembrance plaque in Rookwood Cemetery in Sydney
