The details provided are taken from the book "Stealth Raiders - a few daring men in 1918" written by Lucas Jordan, published 2017, refer to pages 200 and 284. Prior to the war he was a farmer of Sydney NSW. He enlisted 10th June 1915 aged 22 years. He served with the 2nd Infantry Battalion, earning the Military Cross during the war and being promoted to Lieutenant. He survived the war, and departed the UK for home 20th April 1919.

James was the son of Francis Gillies and Jane Connor of Willoughby, New South Wales.
His younger brother, 487 Private Henry Surman Connor 13th Battalion AIF died of Gallipoli wounds in Egypt on 7 May 1915.
James went through the ranks during the war from Private to Lieutenant and was awarded a Military Cross during 1918.
He married in 1919 after his return from the war and raised four children.
