Biography contributed by Les Westerlund
In a book on page 9 of "1000 Men at War" by Malcolm Uren, descibes a mob of new recruits to Northam Training Camp in W.Australia, the "Goldfields Mob", and one of these was Frank, with his big suit case. His new forboding Sergeant said: "Hey, what have you got in that case?". Frank, nicnamed Runt, lifted it with too much ease, and declared to all,,, "There are exactly 53 articles in the case,,,". The Sergeant then lifted the light, featherweight suit case,, " Fifty Three Articles?",,,, Runt humourously replied, "Yes Sir,, a pack of 52 CARDS, and a TOOTHBRUSH", The "Goldfields Mob" was the biggest single Country Town group to join the Battalion.
