E. CORNEY enlisted on 9th August and embarked as Private in 5th Battalion F Company on 21st October 1914. He took part in the
Landing on Gallipoli on 25th April 1915 and in the Battle of Cape Helles where on the 8th May he sustained a wound in his head for which he received hospital treatment for three months.


He returned to his unit in time to take part in the Battle of Lone Pine in August after which he was promoted to Lance-Corporal on 16th
August, Corporal on 4th September and subsequently to Sergeant and prior to Evacuation he was invalided with dysentery. Upon return to Egypt he was on 18th March 1916 granted a commission and transferred to 57th Battalion.


He arrived in France in June 1916 and took part in the Battle of Fleurbaix on 19th July 1916 and the Battle of the Somme in 1916-17 being promoted to Lieutenant on 16th August 1916. On 24th February 1917 he was invalided with dysentery and he was Mentioned in Despatches of February 1917 appearing in "London Gazette" of 1/6/17. On 1st November 1917 he was promoted
to Captain and in 1918 took part in the Battle of Villers-Bretonneux and subsequent actions in the final offensive.

He returned to Australia on 29th May and his appointment was
terminated on 1st July 1919.
