47 years ago today, on the 20th July 1976, Private Arthur Robert Pead, 34th Battalion (Reg No-2379), plasterer from Morgan Street, Islington, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 80. CATHOLIC 3-94. 144.

Born at Islington, New South Wales on the 6th November 1895 to James (died as a result of railway accident at Thornton, N.S.W., 5.12.1905, CATHOLIC 1-G Com. 44) and Elizabeth Pead nee Croese (died 25.3.1929, age 64, CATHOLIC 1-G Com. 45) of Morgan Street, Islington, New South Wales and Chinchen Street, Islington, N.S.W. and 3 Maitland Road, Islington, N.S.W. and 80 Roe Street, Mayfield, N.S.W.; husband of Mary Margaret Pead nee Hanlon (married 1923, Wickham, N.S.W., died 25.6.1968, age 65, sleeping here), Arthur enlisted on the 29th February 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A30 Borda on the 17th October 1916.

Granted leave to England from the 7.6.1918 (reported sick 24.6.1918) to the 1.9.1918.

Arthur returned home on the 10th August 1919, being discharged on the 18th September 1919.

Islington recruits at the Islington Masonic Hall.

Mr. Pead’s name has been inscribed on the Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honour Board.

I have placed poppies at Arthur’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Older brother John Arthur (Jack, born ? ? 1891, Wickham, N.S.W., engine fitter from Chinchen Street, Islington, New South Wales, enlisted 8.8.1915, 1st Battalion, Reg No-4522, RTA 4.3.1919, 13th Battalion, died 16.1.1980, Tighes Hill, N.S.W., age 88-89, not officially commemorated. Jack's name has been inscribed on the Newcastle Amalgamated Society of Engineers Roll of Honour, whereabouts unknown.

Younger brother Ronald Hamilton (referred to as Roy and Chum, born 29.12.1897, Islington, N.S.W., labourer from Chinchen Street, Islington, New South Wales, enlisted 23.11.1915, Reg No-521, 35th Battalion, RTA 5.12.1917, died 18.5.1960, Wallsend, N.S.W., age 62, Plaque in New South Wales Garden of Remembrance, officially commemorated – https://connect.dva.gov.au/.../viewCommemoration.html...,
