84 years ago today, on the Thursday afternoon of the 30th May 1940, Private William Ralph Carr, 34th Battalion (Reg No-728), letter carrier (Newcastle Post Office, N.S.W.), from Donald Street, Hamilton, New South Wales and New Lambton, N.S.W. and Warners Bay Road, Mount Hutton, N.S.W., father of three (Russell Ralph, born 1923, died 1923, sleeping same location), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 47. ANGLICAN 1-83. 40.

Born at Wallsend, New South Wales on the 25th January 1893 to Ralph, died 12.4.1932, Cessnock Hospital, N.S.W., age 67, of Hall's Estate, Cessnock, N.S.W. and 24 Sergeant Street, Cessnock, New South Wales, and Emma Carr nee Wicken, died 14.7.1947, Cessnock Hospital, N.S.W., age 73, mother of 9, of Hall's Estate, Cessnock, N.S.W. and 24 Sergeant Street, Cessnock, New South Wales; husband of Olga May Carr nee Feltis (married 1919, Cessnock, N.S.W., died 13.6.1982, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 86, 42 years a widow, sleeping here, William enlisted on the 22nd January 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A20 Hororata on the 2nd May 1916.

Wounded in action - 10.6.1917 (gassed, Battle of Messines), 17.4.1918 (gassed, severe).

Admitted to hospital 2.7.1917 (exhaustion), 25.9.1917 (myalgia).

Granted leave to England from 31.1.1918 to 15.2.1918.

Invalided to England 29.4.1918.

Commenced return to Australia 19.2.1919.

William arrived home on the 3rd April 1919, being discharged medically unfit on the 25th May 1919.

Mr. Carr’s name has been inscribed on the Newcastle Post and Telegraph Staff Roll of Honour, Cessnock War Memorial, Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial, Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor and the Wallsend & Plattsburg Ancient Order of Forresters, Court Friendship No-4584 Honor Roll.

I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label at William’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Service record states Died after Discharge, 29/5/1940.
