Son of Marcus and Ceilea Schwartz, of Vienna, Austria.
Born in Vienna Austria, while training as a Medical Student he fled Nazi persecution and was transported from England to Sydney onboard the S.S. Dunera. Upon arrival he was sent to a camp at Hay, NSW then in June 1941 to the Internment and POW Camp 2 in Tatura, Victoria.
In May 1943 Max enlisted in the Army, serving with the 8th Australian Employment Company at Tocumwal. On 30 December 1943 while swimming in the Murray River with his friend, Private Schwatz was heard calling for help. Both men drowned beofre they could be rescued, their bodies were later recovered.
