Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Son of Terence Sylvester and Alice Johanna Sheekey, of Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, Australia.

HIS DUTY NOBLY DONE ETERNAL REST GRANT HIM, O LORD

THEY GAVE ALL
The Department of Air has informed Mr. and Mrs. T. S. Sheekey, of Gurwood street, Wagga, that the death of their son, Pilot Officer Bruce Sheekey, has now been presumed to have occurred on December 16, 1943, on which date he became missing. He was the pilot of a Boston bomber, attached to the 114th Squadron. R.A.F., and in that capacity served through the Tunisian campaign and the invasion of Sicily and Italy. On the night that he met his death he was detailed to attack an enemy convoy off Ancona, on the Adriatic coast of Italy, and nothing further is known of his fate, or of the members of his crew. He was 25 years of age.
The late Pilot Officer Bruce Sheekey was educated at the Christian Brothers' High School, Wagga, and from there joined the staff of the Commonwealth Bank, Wagga, later being transferred to Corowa branch, and at the time of his enlistment in the R.A.A.F. was attached to the relieving staff.
His training as a pilot in the Air Force was carried out at flying stations in southern New South Wales and completed with the R.A.F. at Bicester, England. Whilst in Wagga Bruce was for several years treasurer of the St. Vincent de Paul Society and of St. Michael's Tennis Club and was also a member of the Apex Club, in which he took a very active part. Possessing a very bright disposition, Bruce made many friends wherever he went. In a letter to the parents his C.O. in the R A.F. described him as a most experienced pilot, displaying great zeal and determination and admired by the whole squadron for the fine example he set to all.
While serving in Italy he was promoted to commissioner rank. One brother, Flying Officer Ian Sheekey, was killed during air operations in England on February 28 last, and two other brothers, Kevin and Peter, are serving with the A.I.F.
