Son of John Wiseman Pierce and Louisa Pierce, of Sebastian, Bendigo, Victoria.
The late Pte. GEORGE FREDERICK PIERCE, recently killed in action, was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal; son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Pierce, of Sebastion.
Distinguished Conduct Medal
'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He took command of his Lewis gun section in an attack, and bombed an enemy machine gun post single handed, capturing the gun. Later, he carried ammunition to the front line through heavy barrages. He set a splendid example of courage and cheerfulness.'

PRIVATE G. F. PIERCE.
Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Pierce, of Sebastian, received word from the Defence department, through the Rev. Mr. Platt, of Raywood, on Friday evening, that their son, Private G. F. Pierce, was killed in action on 4th October. Private G. F. Pierce was born in Bendigo in 1895, and educated at the Gravel Hill school. He enlisted in June, 1915, and sailed on 10th September, 1915. He was aged 22 years and 5 months. He was a grandson of Mrs. and the late Mr. W. C. Pierce, and nephew of Miss Pierce, McIvor-road, Bendigo, and Mr. and Mrs. W. Howard, Northcote, Melbourne. Another brother is on active service in France. Private G. F. Pierce was a member of the Raywood Rifle Club.
