From How We Served
The final resting place for; - V14644 Sergeant Edgar Danes Shimeld MM of London, England & Middle Park, Victoria, who prior to his immigration to Australia had already served as a career soldier with the British Army.
Edgar had listed his previous duties with the Armed Forces, as having served with the 6th Dragoons, from 1909 to 1920, and previous to which, he had served during the Boer War. During his service with the British Army in the ‘Great War’, Edgar had been decorated for bravery with the Military Medal, and as well had been ‘Mentioned in Despatches’.
Aside these awards for his gallantry in the field, Edgar had as well received the Long Service & Good Conduct Medal. Following his discharge from the British Army, Edgar immigrated to Australia, and on enlisting with the Australian Military Forces due to the outbreak of a Second World War, he, gave his present occupation as a clerk.
On being accepted for fulltime duty within Australia, Edgar was allocated to 3rd Military District Accounts Office. Victorian Lines of Communication Australian Army Pay Corps. Edgar’s service during this second world conflict, following his enlistment in Australia would be continuous until he was evacuated sick on the 29th of December 1942, and admitted into the 115th Australian General Hospital (Heidelberg).
Whilst still under treatment at Heidelberg, Edgar succumbed to illness on the 17th of January 1943, aged 69.
Following his death whilst in the service of his newly adopted country, Sergeant Edgar Danes Shimeld MM, MID, a decorated veteran who had served during three Wars’, was formally laid to rest within Springvale War Cemetery, Victoria.
