Pte Simpson enlisted in Hobart on 24 June 1940. He became a prisoner of war of the Japanese in a camp in Java, then was one of 772 Australian, British and American prisoners transported in the Tamahoko Maru to work in Japan. The ship was sunk on 24 June 1944 by the submarine USS Tang, with the loss of 559 prisoners, including Pte Simpson, aged 32.
