Son of Edwin E Smethurst (1882~ 1953) and Annie Pauline nee Tschampion Smethurst (1898 ~ 1996) of Pakenham East, Victoria.
He is mentioned on the Community Roll of Honour in Pakenham Vic.
Sergeant Smethurst 418014 was the pilot of 78SQN Kittyhawk A29-455 which crashed at The Oaks auxiliary airfield while on a training exercise strafing the airfield. This exercise was in conjunction with the 54th Australian Anti-Aircraft Regiment which erected gun positions adjacent to the airfield. The aircraft surged at the bottom of a shallow dive and struck the ground.
