Born as Edward Sidney Smith in 1914.  Mother's maiden name was Reynolds.  Parents divorced in 1930. He was known as Jack.

He was survived by wife Nancy, sons John and Paul, parents Sidney Wallace Smith and Mrs Jessie Macro and sisters Naomi and Jessie
