Standish Locksley ST VINCENT WELCH was born on 22nd December, 1917 in Narrandera, New South Wales

His parents were Kenyon ST VINCENT WELCH and Verlie Adair HETHERINGTON who married in Christ Church, Queanbeyan, NSW on 5th September, 1911 - his father Kenyon was a Surgeon/Medical Practitioner and was the 1st Flying Doctor in NSW in 1928 and served for a year and then returned to private practice

Standish had previous service in the Senior Cadet Corp before he enlisted with the Royal Australian Air Force on 27th May, 1940 as Air Crew V.

He undertook Course 10 in October 26 to December 24, 1940 with the 2nd RAAF Empire Training Scheme draft & received his Flying Badge - he embarked from Sydney on 3rd October, 1940 and disembarked in Vancouver on 25th October, 1940 - he graduated from the Flying Training Course at the 3 Service Flying Training School in Calgary Canada on 16th January, 1941 (flying Avro Anson aircraft)

He was discharged from the RAAF on 17th January, 1941 on being granted a commission to the Royal Canadian Air Force

Standish died during a Flying Battle in France on 2nd July, 1941 with the 149 (B) Squadron, Royal Air Force when flying in a Vickers Wellington Bomber from Mildenhall in Suffolk, England - he is buried in Brest, Kerfautras Cemetery, Plot 40, Row 1, Grave 7

Inscription on his headstone:

'HE STROVE AND THRIVED, MAY GOD NOW BLESS AND PROTECT HIM"

He was classed as Missing in Action & death presumed at the time

His name is memorialised on the Australian War Memorial and the Roll of Honour in Blayney, NSW
