Sergeant Gilbert Abercrombie Stevenson (Service No:V17462) enlisted in the ACMF on 28 July 1941 as a Private attached to HQ Garrison Brigade. Promoted to Sergeant, he served with 23rd Garrison Battalion and was attached to AAPC District Accounts Office Vic Lines of Communication on 2 December 1942 when he died in Heidelberg Military Hospital (carcinoma of the stomach). 

Gilbert was born in Bagdad via Hobart, Tasmania in 1887, youngest of two children of Gilbert Andrew Amos Stevenson (b1862 in Creswick, Victoria) and his first wife Jessie Paterson (b1851 in Glasgow, Scotland). Gilbert Snr (a Teacher) and Jessie married in 1871 in Creswick, Victoria (Jessie was a Winder in Glasgow before immigrating) and moved to Tasmania where their two children were born and Gilbert was a Teacher in Launceston and Hobart. By 1902 Gilbert Snr was living in Werrap, Wimmera, Victoria where ha was a State School Teacher and Registrar of Births and Deaths, and Jessie was living in Melbourne. In 1906 in Bendigo, Gilbert Snr remarried to Sara Christina Wilkinson (b1882 at Sutton Grange via Bendigo, Victoria). Gilbert Snr and Sara settled in Launceston, Tasmania where Gilbert worked as a Teacher, and in 1910 was allocated a suburban block in Subiaco, Perth, WA. By 1913 Gilbert Snr and Sara had moved to Warrnambool, where they raised their family and in the early 1920s Gilbert was Publican and Sara Licensed Victualler at Napoleon's in Sebastapol, Ballarat. In the mid 1920s they moved to Cressy, where Gilbert Snr was a Newsagent.

Gilbert was a Contractor at Beulah in the Wimmera in 1908 when he married Jessie Mary Preston (b1876 at Mt Dunheed, Victoria) in Geelong. Gilbert and Jessie lived in Underbool and Namengarook in the Wimmera where they raised their family and Gilbert was a Farmer and Contractor. In the mid 1920s the family moved to Ouyen where Gilbert was a Commission Agent before settling in Melbourne in the 1930s. Gilbert was a Commercial Traveller in 1941 when he enlisted in the ACMF. Following Gilbert's death in 1942, Jessie moved to Nambour, QLD wher she died in 1949.
