23 May 1942: Involvement Royal Australian Air Force, Flight Sergeant, 400571, Libya/North Africa, F/Sgt Stewart was acting as Wireless/Air Gunner aboard Baltimore AG717 when the group of 4 bombers were attacked en-route to a bombing a German airfield in Libya. With no fighter escort the aircraft all sustained substantial damage but were able to escape. It is unknown whether he was killed during this action or as a result of the failed landing in which the aircraft crashed and caught fire at 1225 hours on 23rd May 1942 at Tobruk, Libya. Also killed RAF Sgt H C Hogsfield, (Pilot) RAAF 407700 Flt Sgt W J Taylor, (Observer)
