NX112674 (N37196) Stanley John SUTTON (1916 -1943)
Stanley John Sutton had initially been drafted into the Militia and was later commisioned in 2nd AIF as evidenced by his service numbers. He was the Mortar Platoon officer of the 4th Infantry Battalion at the time of the incident below.
He was one of fourteen soldiers of the 4th Infantry Battalion (/explore/units/999) killed on 15th March 1943 near the Battalion camp outside of Moora.They were killed when a mortar bomb, being closely examined by the group, exploded, killing all of them. Lieutenant Sutton was conducting the lesson.
The funeral took place at Moora Cemetery on 16th March, 1943. The bodies were transferred to Karrakatta Cemetery after the cessation of the war.
