Parents: - James Sweeney and Ellen Mary (Nell) McMahon married 26th April 1905 Inverell, New South Wales, Australia. Both Denis's parents died when he was still young, his mother Ellen died in 1912 when he was 6 months old, his father died in 1915. Denis was then raised by his mother's parents Denis and Bridget McMahon.

Cause of death: - Private Denis Sweeny died of injuries ( fractured base of skull, fractured left clavicle,  lacerated scalp and left arm and shock) as result of the the truck he was a spare driver in overturned.

The sad news was received in town on Saturday that Pte. Dennis Sweaney had been killed in a motor accident near Brisbane on the preceding Thursday. Deceased had been in the army for about twelve months and latterly had been stationed at a northern
camp. The late Pte. Sweaney was 31 years of age and single. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James
Sweaney and had resided in the Inverell district all his life. His mother died when he was but six months old,
and he was reared by his grandparents,the late Mr. and Mrs. Dennis McMahon. He only returned to his unit
last week after spending a few days leave in Inverell.
