HMAS MATAFELE LOST WITH. CREW
CANBERRA, Tuesday.—The loss of HMAS Matafele with 24 Australian officers and men and 13 native crew is announced by the Navy Department. Lieutenant-COmmander C. F. Symonds, RN, was in command of the ship.
The Matafale was commssioned in January 1943, as a stores carrier and was used mainly in New Guinea waters. She failed to report at her destination last July. A subsequent extensive sea and air search revealed no trace of the missing vessel.
Lieutenant-Commander Symonds, who joined the Royal Navy as a midshipman in 1914, was mentioned in dispatches for his rescue work at Darwin during the first Japanese air attack.
