Youngest of four brothers (Osmond, Jon and Bob) who served in WWII, Private Albert David Tompkins (Service No:QX5043) enlisted in the AIF on 22 October 1939, and was attached to 2/9 Infantry Battalion on 5 May 1940 when he embarked with his Unit from Sydney for Gourock, Scotland. Private Tompkins then served in the Middle East (16 November 1940 - 12 February 1942) before embarking from Brisbane for New Guinea on 7 August 1942. Private Tompkins was attached to 2/9 Infantry Battalion on 22 December 1942 when he 'Died of Wounds' (NAA).

Albert was born in Gympie, QLD in 1916, seventh of ten children of Osmond (Os) Tompkins (b1879 in Maryborough, QLD) and Caroline Ann Jones (b1883 in Glamorgan, Wales) - Caroline immigrated with her parents and siblings in 1888, arriving in Maryborough on board the Dorunda. Os worked as a Labourer (licensed to cut firewood), and in 1901 he and Caroline married in Gympie, where they settled and raised their family and Os worked as a Labourer/Timbergetter.

Albert was working at Goomboorian via Gympie in 1939 when he enlisted in the Army.
