5 Dec 1918: Honoured Distinguished Conduct Medal, "The Last Hundred Days", For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on 9 August 1918 near Chipilly. A Unit on the left flank was held up while attacking a village, and he was one of a patrol of six who crossed the river to render assistance. He carried out daring patrol work and located enemy posts, and took a prominent part in the capture of a strong enemy post which yielded one officer and 31 other ranks and seven machine guns. He later did valuable work in using the captured guns against the enemy. Altogether his party accounted for one officer, 71 other ranks and nine machine guns. He did splendidly, and showed great courage and initiative.

The diaries that my grandfather wrote during WW1 a NOT held by the AWM, i have both in my possession, the AWM have a hand written account of his recollection of the capture of Chipilly Spur along with 5 other 1st Battalion mates, CQMS Jack Hayes, Pte Kane, Pte Fuller, Pte Turpin, Pte Stevens.
My Grandfather survived the war and he passed away in 11/10/1975 aged 78

Additional to the details taken from "Stealth Raiders". I wrongly wrote that Harold died 6th July 1919 - this is completely wrong, and for that I am sorry. He departed the UK for home on that day. sorry again for my error. Other information : ONE : he wrote a diary during his service and this is held by the Australian War Memorial - reference 1DRL/0043, & TWO : the Mitchell Library in the State Library of NSW hold his memoirs - reference ML MSS 7504 and MLDOC 2754.

WW1

The details provided are taken from the book "Stealth Raiders - a few daring men in 1918" written by Lucas Jordan, published in 2017 - refer various references from page 182 to 199 inclusive plus page 261. Prior to the war this member was a farmer of Wauchope NSW. He enlisted 14 July 1915 aged 19 years. Unfortunately, he died of his wounds 6 July 1919. Lest we forget.
