Daniel McKinnon was captured by the Germans at the Battle of Fromelles 20 July 1916. He was reported by the Germans to have died of wounds in hospital near Douai on the 28 July 1916. (Gun shot wound lower left arm).

His father lived in London and was forwarded his identity disc which was returned by the Germans. His older brother 1917 Pte. David Stanley McKinnon of the 28th Battalion AIF was killed in action the at Pozieres on 29 July 1916, the day after his brother died.
