John Joseph Kitts was born in December 1895 in the town of Llandudno, North Wales. His religion was Roman Catholic and his marital status was single. He was originally a sailor before enlisting. He had no military experience before enlisting. John Joseph’s mother, named Ellen T Ketts, was his next of kin. John enlisted on the 18th of February 1915. He embarked from Adelaide, South Australia and was on board HMAT A2 Geelong on the 31st of May 1915. At the time of his embarkment, he was 19 and 3 months old. He was a part of the 27th Battalion, D Company unit.
While John Joseph Kitts was in Gallipoli, he was hospitalised 4 times due to influenza and enteric fever. After going back to war, he went AWL (absent without leave) in September 1916 and was court martialled in February 1917. In March 1917 he went AWL again and was recorded as a deserter. In March 1920 it was discovered he had re-enlisted in the Royal Engineers in June 1917 under the name Jack Karniquet and subsequently been demobilised. No further action was taken.
