Wing Commander (pilot) Russell Darby Welland 37308 RAF was the CO of 55SQN RAF when he was killed in the loss of Blenheim Z9588 in the Eastern Mediterranean while taking part in an anti-submarine patrol from Beirut to the coast 10 miles east of Suez

Also killed were Flying Officer James Dodds (Observer) RAAF 402014 / Sergeant James Williams Lucas (WOp/AG) RAFVR 751653 / Major Ivor Kingsley Whittaker Australian Army VX24 of HQ 1 Corps
