Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

On the Thursday afternoon of the 18th November 1926, Sapper William Childs, 6th Australian Broad Gauge Railway Operating Company (Reg No-2284), fireman from Young Street, Carrington, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 52. ANGLICAN 2-122. 37.

Born at Auckland County, Bega, New South Wales on the 19th December 1873 as CHILD to Walter and Sarah Childs of Bega, New South Wales, William enlisted on the 19th April 1916 with the 34th Battalion at Carrington, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A30 Borda on the 17th October 1916.
Wounded in action - 2.10.1917 (GSW left shoulder, fractured clavicle).

William was invalided home on the 20th April 1919, being discharged medically unfit (premature senility) on the 3rd June 1919.

Mr. Childs’s name has been inscribed on the Newcastle Federated Engine-Drivers & Firemen's Association Honour Roll, Bega District School WW1 Roll of Honor, Carrington Citizens' Memorial Gates, Carrington Municipal District Roll of Honor and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I have placed poppies at William’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
