WIDE SEARCH FOR TRAINEE
Sydney, Oct. 2.— Cpl Stanley Wilson-Lanyon (46), of Whaling road, North Sydney, who was shot when an air force trainee escaped through a window at a detention camp on Sunday night, died in an R.A.A.F. hospital this afternoon. Police and R.A.A.F. provost men were still searching to-night for a youth whom they desire to interview in connection with the shooting.
Cpl. Wilson-Lanyon was married and served in the last war. He was on guard when a trainee, who was awaiting trial by court-martial on a service charge, grabbed a service revolver from a table and fired five shots after shouting to Wilson-Lanyon, "'Put your hands up."' One bullet entered his abdomen, another his right shoulder and a third grazed his forehead. Blood transfusion and other surgical treatment failed to save his life.
The trainee ran from the camp and has not been seen since, though all available detectives and policemen in the State have been asked to join in the search for him. He dropped a revolver in the camp as he ran away and the police believe that he is unarmed and without money.
