GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT HE LAY DOWN HIS LIFE
The Area News 9th November 1945
Mr. and Mrs. E.A. (Jack) Wood, Binya Street, were informed on Saturday of the death on April 25, 1942, of their son Fred who was a prisoner of war on the west coast of Malaya. He was aged 25 years.
Much sympathy will be felt for Mr. and Mrs. Wood in the loss of a second son in the war. Pte. Gerald Wood was killed in action in New Guinea on December 12, 1942. Thre are two other sons in the services, namely Cpl. Jack Wood RAAF, and Pte. Frank Wood AIF.
The late Fred Wood was educated at the Griffith Convent School. He was manager of the grocery department of Messrs. W.J. Carney & Son's store when he left to take up a similar postion in Goulburn where he enlisted. He was previousl reported missing, but now officially reported died of illness whilst prisoner of war.
