Herbert BRENT was born in Redbank, Victoria in 1863 - his parents were John BRENT & Mary Ann McLILLY who were both born in England
He married Annie Maria DOLBY in Victoria in 1890 and had 5 known children

4. Florence Pearl
5. Harriet (died at 2 days old)
He had previously served in the NSW Militia before returning to Victoria & prior to enlisting in the Boer War was the publican of the Carisbrook Hotel in Victoria
Herbert died on 14th May, 1900 after an accident involving a train and is said to be buried in Marandellas, South Africa (not confirmed)

DEATH OF SERGEANT HERBERT
BRENT.
KILLED IN A RAILWAY ACCIDENT.
AN OFFICIAL TELEGRAM.
We regret to have announce that one of the members of our Third (or Victorian Bushmen's) Contingent has been killed. The victim is Sergeant Herbert Brent, 34 years of age, who prior to joining the corps carried on business as a publican at the Carisbrook Hotel, Carisbrook. The official list shows that the sergeant leaves a widow (Mrs A. Brent, of the Carisbrook Hotel, Carisbrook) and three children to mourn his loss. The following is the text of the official cablegram received by the Lieutenant-Governor from General Sir Frede rick Carrington from Marandellas: —
"Regret report death No. 384, Sergeant Herbert Brent, Victorian Bushmen. Killed in railway accident 15th inst. near Umtall. Letter follows."
