"...5 Trooper (Tpr) George Lawrence Hardy, 2nd South Australian Mounted Rifles (SAMR). Tpr Hardy is wearing an unusual variation of 1871 pattern tan leather waist belt with an 1888 pattern bayonet and tan leather bandolier. Beside him is his slouch hat with a miniature Union Jack fixed to the crown. Tpr Hardy died of enteric fever at Bloemfontein on 4 June 1900." - SOURCE (www.awm.gov.au)

THE SECOND CONTINGENT.

His Excellency the Governor has received a telegram from Sir Alfred Milner, dated Cape, Town, June 6, as follows:—"I regret to report that Private G. L. Hardey, of the South Australian Mounted Infantry, died of enteric fever at Bloemfontein on June 4." The Minister of War has forwarded the condolences of the Government to the widow, Mrs. Hardey, who resides in Charles-street, Norwood. The deceased was a member of the Second Contingent and was formerly in the Christchurch and Kaiapoi Rifles.
