Herbert Hendy was a farmer from Lyndhurst. He was the son of Thomas Hendy and Mary Ann Hill. Herbert was in the militia when he volunteered to enlist in 5VMR. PTE HENDY, Herbert [5692] Victorian Rangers. He enlisted in 5VMR on 31 Jan 1901 as [1380] PTE HENDY, Herbert 5VMR. It is likely that he saw 5VMR as an extension of his part time militia service. Hence, he was a trained soldier who volunteered to fight overseas. Herbert was subsequenty KIA in the 5VMR Wilmansrust debacle. He was one of the 18 NCO's and men KIA along with their Surgeon.
