Add my storyBiography contributed by Maurice Kissane
John James Lawrence was known as Jack. He was born in 1881 but claimed to be two years older to enlist without consent.
He was the son of Richard Henry Lawrence and Johanna Josephine nee Kelly. His mother known as Joan, was born in Ireland. The Roman Catholic Family had eight children including Jack. He was a Station Hand. Jack used his brother as his NOK, not his father for he did not have consent.
Hence it was his brother Walter Lawrence who had to inform their parents that Jack was KIA. (Fatal GSW to Chest). Jack was buried on the Veltd. He was later re-interred to now rest in Grave 26 in the Vryheid Cemetery.
Jack's war service qualified him for the QSA with four clasps. He had been a soldier of Queen Victoria for a week before the Ascension of King Edward VII.
Lest We Forget.
