Captain Claude William Robertson, who is reported by cable to have been killed during the fighting at the Magato Pass, near Rustenburg, is well known in Sydney, having been for some time on the Katoomba. He was born September 10, 1869, and joined the Royal Marine Light Infantry September 1, 1889, as second lieutenant. He became lieutenant July 1, 1890, and captain January 15, 1898. As lieutenant of the Royal Marine Battalion he served in the punitive naval expedition landed from the squadron to punish the King of Benin, West Africa, for the massacre of the political mission in 1897, which ended in the capture of Benin City. His services were mentioned in dispatches, and he received the medal and clasp. Captain Robertson was appointed to the Katoomba August 6, 1897, and remained in Sydney until his departure as a special service officer.
