The Late Farrier-Sergeant J. W. N. Williamson.
The late Farrier-Sergeant Jas. W. N. Williamson was a native of Rochester, his father being Mr. Jas. Williamson, the well known blacksmith. He was extremely popular, and identified himself with almost every public movement. He was a member of the Rangers, and also of the local Fire Brigade. He was an enthusiastic footballer and cricketer. An excellent marksman and an ardent soldier, he volunteered for active service in South Africa, joining the Third Bushmen's Contingent. Our photo, “The Last Farewell. ’ depicts him taking leave of his comrade, Private W. Vincent, of the Rangers, before proceeding to the front.
The gallant soldier unfortunately died of dysentery at Pretoria on December 22 last year. He was 28 years of age, a widower, and left two children. Great sympathy is felt for them, and also his other relatives.
