Wattie's background
Walter - known to everyone as Wattie - was one of a family of six, Freda, Jean, Wattie, Elizabeth, Wilma and Alec. The family home was at Old Kilmadock, Doune, Perthshire in Scotland where his father was a forester on the Earl of Moray's estate.
As a young man Wattie worked on a hill sheep farm before enlisting in the Scots Guards - a premier UK regiment. As a friend of his brother Alec., I recollect seeing Wattie occasionally when home on leave, resplendent in his Guards uniform, the perfect Guardsman. Other than that, I only recollect ever seeing him wear a white open-necked shirt, summer or winter, and the photograph on this site catches him perfectly.
On leaving the Guards, he moved to Australia and joined the Army.
He was highly regarded, friendly and well liked at Doune. It is hard to believe it will be 50 years on 27 Jan. 2018 since he passed away.
