David was the eldest of three children of Eldin Forward Ashlin (born 1873 in Harpurhey, Lancashire, England) and Emma Tyler (born 1876 in Bengal, India). Eldin was a Warehouseman and Emma a Music Teacher when they immigrated to QLD, Australian with their children on board the Euripides.

David was living in Nundah, Brisbane, QLD and working as a Carpenter when he enlisted in Brisbane, QLD in the Australian Army. He served from 1942 to 1042 as a Sapper (Service No: QX29717) with 2/3 Coy Australian Army Service Corps.

David met his first wife, Ivy Gertrude Baker) in Brisbane QLD in June 1943. Ivy was working at the time as Tram Conductress, and they Divorced in 1951.

David continued to live in Brisbane, QLD and work as a Carpenter following his Discharge, and met and married Adaronda (Ada) Grace Phister in 1953 in Sandgate, QLD. David died in 1973 and Ada in 1996
