Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

One of three brothers (Ken and Fred) who served in WWII, Sapper Leonard Bailey (Service Nos:Q108618/QX50655) enlisted in the ACMF on 18 December 1941 and served in New Guiea with 7 Australian Field Coy RAE. Sapper Bailey was 'in the field' at Kapooka NSW on 7 July 1943 when he transferred to the AIF, and was attached to 7 Field Coy RAE at Discharge on 15 January 1945.

Len (Martin Leonard) was born in Brisbane QLD in 1922, fifth of seven children of Frederick William Bailey Snr (b1896 in Ipswich, QLD) and Esther Henricksen (b1896 in Gooburrum via Bundaberg, QLD). Frederick and Esther married in 1917 in Brisbane, where they settled and raised their family. Frederick worked as a Furniture Remover and Carter, and was a Manufacturer.

Len was in his third year as an Apprentice Blacksmith in 1941 when he enlisted in the Army. Following his Discharge, Len returned to Brisbane and was working as a Blacksmith in 1945 when he married Rosemary Duffield (b1925 in Melbourne, Victoria). Len and Rosemary settled in Brisbane, where they raised their family and Len worked as a Blacksmith until the late 1950s. Len then worked as a Manufacturer until retirement, when he and Rosemary moved to North Queensland. Len died in 2001 and Rosemary in 2022.
